Oak Wilt Research & Resource Seminar
REGISTRATION IS OPEN
Current oak wilt research, resources and activities from arborists and researchers in Michigan and the Great Lakes states.
- Hear from pathologists Dr. Juzwik and Dr. Cavender-Bares
- GDD perspectives from Dr. McCullough
- Herbicide insights by Josh Shields, Ph.D
A panel of experts answer your questions & discuss calendar date vs. temperature thresholds for oak wilt prevention, and treatments for forested vs. urban landscapes
NOTE: Research information presented may be preliminary and should not be taken as recommendations for immediate application.
AGENDA
12:00 PM
Registration Opens
12:30 - 1:30 PM
Herbicide Use in Oak Wilt Management - Update
This presentation will contain a brief review of oak wilt biology and how it spreads, as well as a summary of different treatment types (tree removal + trenching, injections, and herbicide application), with a particular focus on the use of herbicides. In terms of herbicide use, the presentation will include information about why this approach is being considered, what has been studied (including case studies from Michigan), and challenges and questions to consider moving forward.
Josh Shields, Ph.D. Forester and Wildlife Biologists, Forestry Assistance Program Manistee and Mason-Lake Conservation Districts
1:30 - 2:30 PM
Factors to Consider When Incorporating Growing Degree Days and Nitidulid Beetles Into Oak Wilt Management
Nitidulid beetles are attracted to mycelial pads produced by trees that have recently been killed by oak wilt. They are also attracted to fresh wounds on oak trees and if a wound exposes xylem tissue (sapwood), the beetles can act as vectors and introduce the oak wilt fungus into the tree. This presentation will include information about activity periods of nitidulids that were monitored in red oak stands in northern Michigan for two years, including degree days associated with captures of spore-bearing beetles. A general discussion about how to access, use and interpret degree day information will also be addressed.
Dr. Deb McCullough, MSU Entomology
2:45 - 3:45 PM
Oak Wilt Activities in Great Lake Region
1. ) A. "Overview of the New US Forest Service Oak Wilt Story Map"; and 1b. "Understanding Oak Wilt Lab Test Results"
2. ) Remote Sensing: Pre- visual detection of oak wilt using hyper - spectral sensors on drones, aircraft or satellites
Topics #1a & 1b) Dr Jenny Juzwik, USDA Forest Service, #2) Dr. Jeanine, Cavender - Bares, Pathologist at U of MN
3:45 - 4:45 PM
Oak Wilt Prevention & Management Panel Discussion
Discuss registrants' questions, submitted at registration; current MI pruning guidelines for oak trees; calendar date recommendations vs GDD; possible use of two- pronged messaging, one for urban forestry and one for forested lands. Audience may ask panelists questions at the event.
